Birth Doula Services
What is a doula? A doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to laboring mothers. Doula is a Greek word that literally means “women’s servant”.
Why do I need a doula if I have a partner?
The doula’s job is not to replace your partner, but rather to complement them and work together synergistically to give you a safe, empowering, and memorable birth.
What does a doula do?
In the prenatal period, as your doula, I will get to know you and your desires for your upcoming birth. I will be happy to help you create a birth plan, give you information on the pros and cons of various procedures, and help to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. Although doulas are not medical providers, most have extensive knowledge in many medical aspects of pregnancy, labor and delivery. My training as a student midwife has allowed me to build on this knowledge, and has also taught me to perform many clinical skills related to labor and birth.
During your birth, I will provide comfort and pain relief techniques such as: massage, breathing techniques, assistance with different laboring positions, aromatherapy, acupressure, and more. I can also explain procedures to you, and provide detailed information to help you make the best choices for yourself and your baby. I am also happy prepare snacks or light meals, and offer encouragement and reassurance for dads as well. I also offer the use of my Tens machine while in labor to help reduce any pain or discomfort you may feel.
My doula package includes
- 2-3 prenatal visits to get to know you, discuss your birth plan, etc.
- Telephone and email communication throughout your pregnancy as desired
- 24 hr. on call status from your 36th week of pregnancy until your birth
- Complete doula support during your labor and birth (home/birth center/hospital)
- A postpartum visit to assist with breastfeeding & to discuss your birth
After your birth, I will assist you with breastfeeding, take pictures (if desired), and help explain the tests and procedures available to your newborn. At the postpartum visit, you will have time to process and discuss your birth experience, as well as receive help with any additional breastfeeding concerns and newborn care questions.
Postpartum Doula Services
My postpartum doula services include: breastfeeding advice and assistance, baby care tips and suggestions for new parents, cloth (or disposable) diapering information and assistance, information on attachment parenting practices if desired, light cooking and housework as needed, assistance with setting up the car seat and baby’s first trips out, help with other siblings, caring for baby if mom wants to rest, running errands, help with sleeping issues, assistance with twins, advice on good nutrition and a proper breastfeeding diet.
I am a senior student midwife working with a wonderful local homebirth midwife, Karen Maschue. As an apprentice, I will be there to support you throughout your labor, as well as to assist with your baby’s birth. If you are interested in having a homebirth, please contact me or Karen for more information. She does offer free consults if you would like to explore the homebirth option further. I am also happy to answer any questions you may have about birthing at home!
Two packages are currenty available so you can choose what best meets your needs. The first option includes all prenatal visits done in the comfort of your own home. We will come to you and spare you the trip out! This is especially nice when it is summertime in the desert. Package number two offers similar services, but you would come to the office for your prenatal visits instead. The office is located at 40th Street and Cactus Avenue in Phoenix.
This includes making specialized placenta pills for you to take in your post partum period. I use the Traditional Chinese Method of placenta preparation, and you will receive your pills and instructions within 1-3 days after I receive your placenta. I will also dry out the cord as a keepsake at no additional cost if you are interested in preserving it. I also offer placenta tinctures and herbal extracts to boost milk supply; both are optional add-ons.
